Blue Earth Area Reads: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

The public libraries in the Blue Earth Area School District have partnered to plan the first Community Reads program in the area. We have selected "Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline. Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by luck or chance. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude?

We have planned 3 different types of events: book discussions, film showings of a PBS American Experience documentary about the Orphan Train and a presentation by Renee Wendinger. Renee's mother was a rider on the orphan train.

This program will be: Film Showing of American Experience:  The Orphan Train

This event is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
